Cardiac Catheterization

Cardiac Catheterization is a procedure performed for evaluating your heart and coronary arteries. The blood flow in the coronary arteries, blood flow and blood pressure in the heart chambers are all measured. The gathered data gives the physician information about how well the heart valves work and identify any movement defects in the walls of the heart muscle. The results are commonly used to identify atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries from plaque build up) and the location and size of the plaque narrowing the arteries. This test is also used in determining if treatment with bypass surgery or PCI (percutaneous coronary intervention) or PTCA(percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty) may be effective.

Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) or Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty (PTCA)

Angioplasty, also known as the above PCI or PTCA is a procedure in which a catheter is placed to guide a balloon into the narrowed coronary artery increasing blood flow to the heart. A stent (mesh tube that expands) is usually placed in the narrowed section of the artery to hold the artery open. Generally, a cardiac catheterization and/or coronary angiography are done as a precursor to this procedure to identify the offending coronary artery or arteries.
